Travertine Resurfacing · New Orleans, LA
Travertine Resurfacing for New Orleans, LA
Travertine resurfacing is a multi-step restoration process: the stone is mechanically ground to remove scratches, etching, and surface damage; the natural pores and voids are filled with color-matched material; the surface is honed or polished to a chosen finish; and a penetrating sealer is applied to protect against moisture, staining, and the relentless humidity of coastal Louisiana. In New Orleans specifically, travertine often suffers from moisture intrusion, efflorescence, hard water staining from older plumbing, and the general wear of homes that see a lot of living. Resurfacing addresses the stone at the surface level — it's not a coating or a patch, it's a mechanical restoration. The result is structurally sound, visually consistent stone that performs better than it did before.

"I purchased 4 slabs of marble to use in a kitchen remodel. They were polished when I selected them, and were sent to the supplier’s fabricator to be honed. Once installed, the slab used in the island and countertops had a leathered texture in the areas of darker veining… all the other pieces…"
"Stone Trends, a family run business, was timely, clean and professional. Part of the work being performed was removing a factory seal on a marble table. They applied a coating to the surface to stop stains on the marble surface. The coating has a lifetime warranty!!!! My bathroom countertops look…"
FAQ
Travertine Resurfacing in New Orleans, LA — common questions
My New Orleans home had some flooding. Can flood-affected travertine be resurfaced?
It depends on the extent of the damage and whether the stone has fully dried and stabilized. Surface staining, efflorescence, and etching from flood exposure are often resurfaceable. If there's ongoing moisture coming up from below, that has to be addressed before any stone work begins. We'll assess this at the inspection and be straightforward about what's feasible.
The travertine in my Uptown home has old wax on it. Does that affect resurfacing?
Old wax buildup is common in historic New Orleans homes and has to be stripped before resurfacing can begin — grinding over wax causes problems with the finish. We include stripping in the process when needed. It adds some time but it's necessary for a proper result.
Can you match the finish on resurfaced areas to existing stone that isn't being resurfaced?
We do our best to match finish levels across areas, and in most cases we can get very close. Full consistency is easiest when the entire floor is done at once. If you're doing a partial area, we'll discuss what to expect in terms of blending at the assessment.
Is travertine resurfacing safe for homes with children and pets?
The process involves grinding dust and sealers that require ventilation and drying time. We recommend keeping people and pets out of the work area during the job and for the sealer cure period — typically 24–48 hours. After that, the surface is safe for normal household use.
New Orleans has a lot of older plumbing — will hard water stains keep coming back after resurfacing?
The resurfacing removes existing hard water etching and staining, and the sealer applied afterward significantly slows new buildup. That said, if you have ongoing hard water issues, mineral deposits will eventually return without regular maintenance. We'll recommend a cleaning routine and a resealing schedule that makes sense for your situation.
